Crowns
A crown is a "cap" that covers the top of a tooth to rebuild and strengthen it.

When you loose too much tooth structure and a tooth cannot be fixed with a filling, the tooth must be crowned to rebuild and strengthen it. Sometimes, if you have cracked your tooth, a crown can be put on the tooth to hold it together.

There are three basic kinds of crowns: Gold, Porcelain with metal, and all Porcelain.

Gold crowns have been the standard for many years and are still a good choice for the back of the mouth, especially when someone is a hard chewer, clencher or grinder. There is nothing to break, and the metal bends a little.
The porcelain with metal crown is best used when the edges go deeper under the gums and a tooth colored crown is desired. An all porcelain crown, using the latest bonding materials, is the most natural-looking crown. The procedure is more technique sensitive and when done right will result in a strong and aesthetic tooth.

Both types of porcelain crowns can crack on back teeth if one is a clencher or grinder.

We work very closely with our dental lab on both types of porcelain crowns to ensure the best shape and color match.
